A dental syringe holds a cartridge of local anaesthetic and a needle for injection. The syringe shown is reusable and aspirating. The harpoon on the plunger engages the cartridge's rubber stopper, so drawing back on the thumb ring pulls the stopper back and lets you check the needle position before injecting.

Care

Clean the chamber, harpoon and thread after each use. Check that the harpoon is sharp and the thumb ring moves smoothly. Follow the supplied processing instructions and your facility's validated protocol.

What does reusable mean for a dental cartridge syringe?

Reusable describes the instrument body that holds the dental cartridge. The cartridge and the needle are separate components with their own use instructions, and the reuse designation of the body does not extend to them.

Does a cartridge-volume label guarantee syringe compatibility?

No. Nominal volume is only one cartridge attribute. The cartridge format and the way the body and plunger engage also matter. Compare the specified cartridge format with the syringe model, including how the stopper meets the plunger, instead of relying on volume alone.

Does a matching cartridge also establish that the needle will fit?

No, the two connections are separate. The cartridge sits in the syringe barrel and engages the plunger, while the needle hub connects to the head. Select the head connection separately from the cartridge capacity and format.

Are harpoon-style and self-aspirating interchangeable syringe descriptions?

No. They describe different features. Harpoon-style refers to a pointed plunger end that engages the stopper, while self-aspirating names a particular aspiration arrangement. Neither the cartridge capacity nor a cartridge subtype name identifies the syringe mechanism.
