Cross-Family Confusions Worth Naming Explicitly
A few of the crossings in the chart above cause a disproportionate share of ordering mistakes. Periosteal elevators and dental root elevators share the word "elevator" but are completely different instruments — periosteals reflect soft tissue with a blunt, wide blade, while root elevators luxate teeth with a sharp working blade. Ordering "elevator, Molt #9" from an extraction supplier can produce either depending on how the supplier reads the request. Always name the family before the pattern.
Sickle scalers and curettes are the other frequent confusion in periodontal ordering. Both are periodontal hand instruments, both may be double-ended, and both use the same handle families — but their working ends are fundamentally different. A pointed toe with a triangular cross-section is a sickle scaler; a rounded toe with a semicircular section is a curette. If the pattern name is unfamiliar, verify the toe form on the sample before approving the range.
Tissue forceps (spring-handle) and cotton pliers (also spring-handle, also often locking) look similar in a small catalog image and are sometimes labelled interchangeably by non-dental suppliers. A tissue forceps has finer, often toothed tips designed for soft tissue; a cotton pliers has broader, serrated tips designed to hold cotton rolls and small items. If a quote returns "tissue pliers" or "dressing forceps" without further detail, ask for a photograph of the tip before ordering.
