Reading the Pattern Names
The pointed toe and triangular cross-section distinguish a sickle scaler from a curette, which has a rounded toe instead. Anterior patterns generally use straighter shanks than posterior patterns, suited to the more accessible surfaces at the front of the mouth. Pattern names still describe different blade lengths, widths, and access angles even within the anterior group — the name alone does not confirm exact blade dimensions between manufacturers.
Sample Approval
We recommend approving a sample when standardizing a range or matching an existing instrument line, since blade dimensions vary between manufacturers even for the same pattern name. Sample review should cover blade symmetry, pointed-toe finish, edge consistency, shank alignment, and handle diameter before a bulk order.
