About Tofflemire Matrix Retainers
A Tofflemire matrix retainer is the screw-adjusted holder used with a separate circumferential matrix band during restorative work. The retainer shown here has a slotted head and adjustment knobs; it is not a sectional matrix ring or the forceps used to place one.
Selecting the right configuration
Identify the required retainer pattern, head geometry, compatible band dimensions and quantity. Universal and junior patterns are distinct purchasing choices, and the word “universal” does not prove compatibility with every matrix system. Specify bands as separate consumables when they are required in the order.
Measurements and evidence
Medesy lists universal and junior Tofflemire-pattern retainers with different band-width references. Its 5, 6 and 7 mm measurements describe supported band widths, not overall retainer length. Confirm the overall dimensions for the quoted retainer. Request the quoted retainer’s length and band-fit schedule instead of copying a number into the wrong specification field.
Care and documentation
Sample checks should cover the screw travel, condition of the head slots and smooth adjustment without binding. Follow the supplied model’s instructions for assembly, band fitting and reprocessing. The band’s own instructions also apply; reuse or processing assumptions for a metal retainer do not automatically apply to its consumable band.
