About Dental Articulators

An articulator holds the upper and lower casts in their bite relationship so that crowns, bridges, dentures and appliances can be made and checked outside the mouth. Articulators differ in how much of the jaw's movement they can reproduce. We offer four types.

The four types

Simple hinge: opens and closes around one axis. Suitable for simple single-unit work and study models where side-to-side movement is not needed.
Mean-value: built with fixed average jaw settings, so it reproduces typical movements without individual measurements.
Semi-adjustable: accepts settings taken from the patient, so it reproduces that patient's movements more closely for more complex work.
Magnetic mounting: uses magnetic mounting plates so casts can be taken off and put back on quickly.

Choosing an articulator

Choose by the work you do. Simple and mean-value articulators suit routine and teaching work; a semi-adjustable articulator suits cases where individual jaw movement matters. Mounting plates may not fit between different models, so if you use existing plates, send their dimensions and we confirm the fit.

Choose by movement, then by mounting

Start with movement. Simple hinge, mean-value and semi-adjustable cover a range from opening and closing only, through average settings, to settings taken from the patient. Choose the least complex option that still reproduces what your work needs to check.

Then decide on mounting. Magnetic mounting describes how the casts attach, not how the jaw moves. Its benefit is speed: casts come off and go back on quickly, which helps when the same case is handled many times during a job. Because movement and mounting are separate choices, one request can cover both, for example average movement settings together with magnetic mounting. We confirm the model, its settings and the plates included on your quotation.

Dental Articulators Questions

What is a dental articulator?

A dental articulator supports upper and lower casts in a defined relationship for work outside the mouth. Its movement design governs the motions or guidance it represents, while its mounting system governs how the casts attach, so compare those two aspects separately when you choose a configuration.

How do hinge, mean-value and semi-adjustable articulators differ?

A simple hinge design provides opening and closing around a hinge, mean-value designs use preset reference geometry, and semi-adjustable designs allow selected guidance parameters to be set. Compare the actual control list, because a class name does not mean every setting is either fixed or adjustable.

Is magnetic mounting an articulator movement type?

No. Magnetic describes mounting retention, not the movement class: fixed and adjustable articulators can both use magnetic mounting. Choose the movement capability you need and the cast-mounting interface as separate attributes.

Does an adjustment screw make an articulator semi-adjustable?

Not necessarily. The kind of adjustment matters: opening or height adjustment changes a different attribute from condylar or lateral guidance settings. Identify which parameters the actual model adjusts when you compare a semi-adjustable configuration.

Do fitting mounting plates establish accurate cast transfer between articulators?

No. Mechanical attachment and calibrated transfer are separate requirements, and a plate can attach to a frame without that fact alone establishing the cast relationship on another instrument. Compare the documented mounting system and any specified transfer or calibration arrangement together.

How does working clearance differ from the outside size of an articulator?

Outside dimensions describe the frame's envelope, while working clearance describes the space available for casts and their mounting assembly, and opening angle is another attribute. Compare the working-space specification for the actual model instead of using the exterior height as a substitute.
