About Mayo-Hegar Needle Holders

The Mayo-Hegar is a needle holder pattern, also called a Mayo-Hegar needle driver, used to hold and guide a suturing needle.

How a Mayo-Hegar needle holder works

In a ring-handled, ratchet-locking design, the ring handles operate the jaws, the jaws contact the needle, and the ratchet retains closure. Jaw profile and contact surface are separate choices: the family name alone does not identify them. Match the individual reference to the needle and instrument configuration your team requires.

Comparing needle holders

The pattern name does not tell you everything you need to match an instrument. Compare these attributes separately:

Overall length: the size of the instrument from end to end. A longer holder is not automatically better; compare the length your team uses.
Jaw contact and profile: the size and surface of the jaws that hold the needle.
Needle requirement: the needle sizes the jaws are documented to hold.
Construction version: how the working jaws are constructed. The Mayo-Hegar name alone does not identify the jaw material.

If you are reordering, identify the reference of the needle holder you used before, not just its length.

Does the scissor-shaped handle mean it cuts?

No. The ring handles are scissor-shaped, but that is only how the instrument is held and operated. A needle holder with built-in cutting blades is a different design. A combined needle-holding and suture-cutting function must be specified separately; scissor-shaped handles alone do not establish it.

A Mayo-Hegar holds and guides a suturing needle. Closing the finger rings brings the jaws together, and the ratchet keeps them closed so the needle stays held while you guide it.

**Jaws**
Hold the needle. Photograph the tips and contact faces close up.
**Joint**
The pivot just below the jaws that lets them open and close.
**Ratchet**
The catch between the handles that keeps the jaws closed on the needle.
**Finger rings**
The ring handles that you use to operate the jaws and the ratchet.

Give the length in millimetres. Inch labels are rounded: DIS-CAT-0344 (175 mm) and the 180 mm references are all listed as 7 in. DIS-CAT-0361 (205 mm) and most 200 mm references are listed as 8 in.
